Old grit is a collective term for very thin pieces of iron and steel with a thickness of 3 mm or less. These are often small fragments created by demolition, metalworking or cutting residues from industry. Despite its light size, grit is excellent for recycling.

Because grit consists of many small parts, it is usually processed in bulk. The process involves a number of steps:
Collection - grit is collected loose or in containers
Sorting - any contaminants such as wood, plastic or concrete are removed
Bulk processing - the grit is bundled and prepared for remelting
Remelting - the steel goes to the blast furnace and is completely reused
