What are plug-in cards with a cooler?
Plug-in cards such as video cards and some network cards are often equipped with a cooler or cooling block. This provides heat dissipation, but usually consists of aluminum, copper and plastic parts. When recycling, these materials must first be removed or separated to optimally recover the valuable metals in the circuit boards.
Plug-in cards with cooling are mostly found in high-performance systems and gaming hardware. Common sources are:
Graphics cards (GPUs) - video cards with heatsinks and fans
Server cards - network or compute cards that are additionally cooled
Specialty expansion cards - for example, RAID controllers or compute modules with active cooling

The recycling process is much the same as for cards without a cooler, but there is an additional step to remove and separate the cooler:
Collection - plug-in cards are kept separate from other electronics
Disassemble - cooling blocks, fans and plastic parts are detached
Processing - the circuit boards and chips are ground and chemically treated
Recovery - precious metals such as gold, palladium and silver are recovered; cooling blocks made of aluminum or copper are recycled separately
