Recycling household appliances

Why recycling household appliances is important
From vacuum cleaners and microwaves to washing machines and coffee makers, household appliances are indispensable in every household. Once they break down or become obsolete, they still contain valuable metals and parts. In addition, batteries, cables and electronics can contain harmful substances. Recycling household appliances preserves raw materials and prevents pollution.

Recycling household appliances

Which household appliances
are often released?

Both small and large devices fall under this category. Some common examples are:

  • Small appliances - coffee makers, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, toasters

  • Large appliances (white goods) - refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers

  • Kitchen appliances - microwaves, mixers, food processors

  • Power tools - drills, sanders and gardening tools

Handing in household appliances has distinct advantages:

  • Valuable raw materials - copper, aluminum and precious metals are recovered

  • Environmental benefits - harmful substances such as refrigerants or batteries are safely handled

  • Circular use - materials get a second life in new products

  • Saving space - old appliances do not disappear into the trash or shed

What is the process of recycling
household appliances?

Appliance recycling is done in multiple steps to efficiently utilize all materials:

  1. Collection - appliances are picked up or handed in at a collection point

  2. Disassemble - loose parts, cables and batteries are removed

  3. Separation of materials - metals (copper, aluminum, steel) and plastics are separated

  4. Remelting & processing - metals are reused in industry, plastics processed separately

  5. Reuse - usable parts sometimes find application again
